Windows 10 Support Ended: Is ESU Right For You?
Windows 10 support has officially ended. Are you still running it on your desktop? Here is how to stay secure with Extended Security Updates.

What Happens Now That Windows 10 Support Has Ended?
As of October 14, 2025, Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows 10. This means your computer will no longer receive the critical security updates that protect it from new viruses, malware, and cyber threats. While upgrading to Windows 11 is the recommended path for most users, Microsoft has introduced the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program as a bridge for those who aren't quite ready to make the switch.
Signs Your PC Needs Attention
If you are still running Windows 10, your device is now at higher risk. You might notice the following:
- Security Alerts: Frequent notifications from Windows or your antivirus software regarding outdated operating system files.
- Update Failures: Standard Windows Updates are no longer providing security patches, leaving your system vulnerable.
- Performance Concerns: While not directly related to ESU, running an unsupported OS can sometimes lead to compatibility issues with newer software and hardware drivers.
How to Check and Enable ESU
Before you begin, ensure your device is running Windows 10, version 22H2. You must also have the latest updates installed to be eligible.
How to check if ESU is active:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt (search for 'cmd', right-click it, and select 'Run as administrator').
- Type slmgr /dlv and press Enter.
- Look for the License Status in the pop-up window. If it says 'Licensed' for the ESU program, you are already covered.
How to enable ESU:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- If your device is eligible, you will see an option to Enroll now.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to sign in with your Microsoft account. You can choose to redeem Microsoft Rewards points or make a one-time purchase to activate the coverage.
